Spring & Summer Art Fairs in the West

Frieze Art Fair; Los Angeles

We are just now at the beginning of the spring and summer Art Fair season! You don’t have to be a high roller collector nor a special insider to attend art fairs. In fact, they are a great way to get exposure to galleries, artists and types of work well beyond your own city and sometimes, comfort zone.

In early March I attended FRIEZE LA. An art fair like this brings together leading galleries from around the world, collected in one location for buyers and industry connected professionals to discover both new talent and see works by established, important figures in the world of art. Frieze Art Fair takes place in multiple cities, as well as London and Seoul, over the course of the year. I love walking a fair like this with no time constraints and either alone or with a friend who similarly likes to take a meandering path and let the eye lead. I find it fascinating to see what themes and connections emerge as you take in such a vast array of artwork in one setting. See below for a an example.

Here are some fairs and art markets coming up in the Northwest and beyond this spring/summer that you can check out:

O.R.P.

I found it hard to deny a color theme that jumped out at me all day at Frieze LA, not only because of how many works across various mediums featured it, but also because of the nature of these colors themselves.

Orange-Red-Pink, or as I called it, O.R.P., is not a quiet color combo and it seemed that one or all three of these were present in a loud way across much of fair. OK, the Frieze’s brand color and my friend’s outfit may have played a part.

ART FAIR PEOPLE-WATCHING

From people who dress like the art, complement the art, wear art, get photo-bombed by the art, and bring their furry friends to the art, Frieze and most art fairs are a steady stream of fabulous people watching!

I hope you get out and enjoy some wonderful art, people watching and fresh air this spring and summer in the Northwest!
